Euphonium Solo

This piece was written for my friend Jack Lorens who is an incredible Euphonium player. Comprised of three movements, this solo work explores a wide variety of areas, ranges, and techniques of the instrument. This piece borrows materials from works by the composers of the Second Viennese School. The first movement is fast and technical. Using quotes from Anton Webern and Alban Berg the player is required to show off their dexterity of range and speed of articulations. The second movement, shadowing a piece by Arnold Schoenberg, is unmetered and only 11 measures long. Pitch bends, triple multi phonics, and other extended techniques are employed to stretch what is possible on the instrument. The last movement grows out of a dense melodic fragment that expands throughout the movement.
