Sonnets

I. The Ballerina
II. Brothers
III. Doorbells
IV. LBL

This is a collection of four very short pieces for piano inspired by different members of my family and friends. The title refers more to the shortness of the movements, and less about an actual structure within the movements themselves. They are arranged chronologically from when I first wrote them; the oldest dates back to 2013. I originally composed them as small gifts of appreciation to friends. I hope to add more movements in the future.

The first movement is inspired by a dancer friend of mine. She always walked so elegantly and was constantly on the move. The second movement is inspired by my brothers. On the piano at my parents house there is Piano Literature Book 4 by Faber piano publications that both of my brothers would constantly play through each with their own style. It always intrigued me that they both brought different interpretations to the same work. In this same spirit the second movement of my work has the following performance direction: “Everything is left up to the discretion of the performer. Use of pedal, dynamics, tempo, rubato, articulation, etc.”

The third movement is dedicated to the lively spirit of my childhood best friend. We spent countless hours at his childhood home and he had the stereotypical melodic doorbell ring anytime anyone came over. The fourth movement is inspired by a trio of friends I had in high school nicknamed the “Leather Binder League.” This was a group of friends that included the dedicatee of the first and third movements. This group could easily move from the deepest of topics to the lightest of jokes and adventures.
